After temporary closer Bayanihan occupants can not return

STALL owners of the closed Bayanihan Hotel cannot go back to their stalls yet pending a go signal from the Baguio Fire Department, Baguio City Mauricio Domogan said.

Domogan said it is up to Baguio Fire Marshall Richard Villanueva to certify stall owners have already complied with fire safety requirements and are allowed to resume business in the old building. But until Villanueva gives his report to the city mayor, Bayanihan stall owners are still disallowed from the establishment.

Reports that reached to Domogan said repairs have been done by the tenants such as repainting, rewiring of the old electrical system, several minor constructions and repairs.

Tenants also repaired the first floor of the building but other parts of the building are still undergoing repairs, he said.

The mayor clarified they have no authority on who will lease out the building, stressing it is a private property and the only concern of the City Government is the safety of the people occupying the area and the customers they serve.

He also learned some occupants in the building have complained of being replaced by other occupants by the building administrator of the Bayanihan Hotel.

Because there is an ongoing legal battle on who is the real administrator of the building, the mayor told the owners to respect the rights of the lessees, especially those with legitimate business permits issued by the city.

Up to now, the Bayanihan Hotel, a mecca of ukay-ukay or secondhand clothing stalls, has been closed due to violations of the Fire Code of the Philippines, the fire marshal reported.

Earlier, the administrator of the building under Pines Commercial Corporation signified compliance to the requirements set by the fire department.

They also said they will conduct massive repairs to ensure safety of occupants in time for the Christmas season.

Stall owners, meanwhile, are eager to resume business as the yuletide season always brings in more customers to their shops. - (SunStar / by JM Agreda)
