POLICE reinforcement is seen as an effective way to control activities on illegal logging.
Benguet Police Director Benjamin Lusad said the regional public safety battalion (RPSB) assigned in Basilan will be back on the first quarter of 2012 to reinforce the province’s campaign against illegal logging.

“There will be a downloading of 25 personnel of RPSB to the province for us to have quality checkpoints along Halsema highway and with the Nueva Vizcaya road,” stated Lusad.
Lusad identified Atok, Tublay, Bokod, Buguias and Kabayan as the main sources of the apprehended lumbers illegally logged.
In Tublay, Caponga Barangay chief Edward Cosalan revealed many residents are illegally logging along Halsema Highway during Saturdays and Sundays. Loggers are active mostly after lunch or evening of the weekends.
Cosalan further reported the technique of the loggers to surpass the different checkpoints of the police. He said there is a ‘transport system’ being applied by the loggers.
“Loggers have buddies along the highway wherein they will first ask for information on whereabouts of the police assigned in the checkpoints. If there are police, apan da pay ag – standby dituy junction of Tublay,” Cosalan said.
He added the “transport system” is a transfer of lumbers into another vehicle to confuse the police on duty and avoid confiscation. Cosalan said this system is very effective to the illegal loggers.
However, Lusad assured the community of Tublay that they already have control on the illegal logging happening in the municipality. “We are doing efforts on establishing quality checkpoints. In the transport system of loggers, that is where our intelligence team comes out because all operations should be intelligence driven.”
Additional checkpoints will be put up along the Halsema highway but in confidential basis and through alternation for easy apprehension of illegal loggers.
Lusad said there are a lot of hidden checkpoints along the national highway not only Halsema but includes other main roads. - (SunStar / by Rubyloida Bitog)
