Good samaritans serves as Santa Claus for this woman in need

Santa Claus is no longer a child’s dream. He appeared and fulfilled the only wish of a needy kidney patient this Christmas.

Genevieve Gano, 21, a native of Hungduan, Ifugao was diagnosed with kidney failure April 2009 at the Solano Medical Mission Group Hospital.

Since then, her dreams were shattered and she can no longer continue her education. She was then a student of Baguio Central University taking up Bachelor of Science in Commerce major in Financial Management.

She started her twice-a-week dialysis last 2009 which costs P2,600.

However, when her family was financially drained, she usually skipped her twice-a-week dialysis. From the regular session, she toned down to once a week.

In 2010, veteran journalist Ramon Dacawi called on the public for donations to sustain the life of Gano. Through publications, Gano received various amounts from donors who heard her stories.

Samaritans flocked to the doors of Benguet Renal Center where she’s having her dialysis.

The donations prolonged Gano’s life for months.

However, Gano needs continuous dialysis because it serves as her only lifeline. Donations were used and again, Gano’s family is in total debt because they sold all their properties for the hemodialysis.

The patient turned pale of skin mostly black and her appearance made her look like she’s older than her age. She is also experiencing ascites which is the accumulation of water in an abdominal cavity. This was caused by her irregular dialysis where water is now accumulating in her stomach and which will extend to her lungs.

She looks like that she’s ‘pregnant’ due to the gradual enlargement of her stomach.

Gano appealed again to Dacawi for more calls for help.

This prompted Dacawi to write the life story of Gano in a local newspaper. Dacawi further seeks donors from the readers if they could again extend help for the poor patient.

A mysterious Manuel, who was described as ‘rakista’ or a band singer went to the Benguet Renal Center and sponsored Gano’s eight sessions which cost P17,600. The cost was discounted because of the presence of Gano’s person with disability card.

Manuel wanted Gano to get back to regular dialysis this Christmas.

Gano and her donor met last Tuesday during the patient’s dialysis. Manuel graciously gave an additional of P10,000 to Gano for her further treatment.

Manuel wants his identity to be kept secret. He only told the attending nurse he is from Mt. Province. He promised to donate more these coming days.

Another anonymous donor gave P1,000 to the patient last Wednesday through ABS–CBN.

The donor is a woman who also doesn’t want her name to be known.

“Blessings are pouring over our center this Christmas for Genevieve. And we are so glad for her. I hope more donors will arrive. Let us help one another to prolong her life,” said attending nurse Cherry Palsic.

The family of the patient is still knocking on the Samaritans’ and other Santa Clauses’ doors. “Uray bassit ket dakkelen kinyak diyay, your help will always be remembered as part of my life. I am thankful for the donors most especially Manuel,” said Gano.

For inquiries, you can contact Gano’s number (0912) 963-2162 or her friend (in case Gano is not feeling well) (0949) 677-9685.

You can also channel your donations to the Benguet Renal Center through Palsic. The center is located behind the Benguet General Hospital in La Trinidad. - (SunStar / by Rubyloida Bitog)
