Manager of Benguet Vegetable Processing Center, Dr. Violeta Salda, was awarded the Presidential Lingkod Bayan Award by President Benigno Aquino III last November 9 at the Malacañang Palace.

This was in recognition of Salda’s enormous and unending public service to Filipinos not only in the region but also Ilocos Region and Cagayan Valley.

Aquino gave a medallion, a plaque, P200,000 and a one-step salary grade promotion to honor Salda.

Salda is the founder of the Benguet Vegetable Processing Center, through her initiative to pass a proposal for the utilization of Benguet vegetables.

In 2007, she submitted her proposal, which was supported by former Benguet State University (BSU) president Rogelio Colting.

Her proposal was then referred to the office of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo during her visit to the opening of the vegetable trading post in Km. 5, La Trinidad.

“[At] that time, I was really thinking of helping our farmers market their products. I also thought of minimizing the losses of farmers because I for one experienced the life of a farmer. I am from this place so I am aware of the situation. So I came up with the proposal for the establishment of this center,” Salda said.

In 2008, a check worth P10 million arrived at BSU that came from Arroyo’s special project fund. It was intended for the support of the proposal of Salda.

Six million pesos was appropriated for the construction of the center’s building, while P4 million was allocated for the facilities.

Prior to the recognition, Salda was giving free trainings since 2009 in Cordillera, Ilocos Region and Cagayan Valley. She was able to train producers in Buguias, Atok, Mankayan, Bokod and La Trinidad.

Salda was earlier awarded by the Provincial Government unit of Benguet. The BSU also awarded her the loyalty award for 25 years in service in the institution.

Salda was among the awardees of the Civil Service Commission Regional and National Lingkod Bayan conducted recently. In 2006, Barangay Pico recognized her community service and achievements.

She graduated from BSU with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Agriculture then continued her masters education in Agriculture in the same university.

In 1999, she attained her Doctorate Degree in Food Science in the University of Hong Kong in 1999.

Salda is married to La Trinidad Municipal Vice Mayor Romeo Salda and are blessed with five children. - (SunStar / by Rubyloida Bitog)
