The Angeles City delegation, composed of 26 athletes from four sports events, won seven golds, 17 silvers, and nine bronze medals in the Batang Pinoy 2011 Northern Luzon leg held here from November 24 to 27.

It also bagged the 4th overall ranking, beating 22 other teams from various provinces and cities in regions 1, 2, and 3 including the Cordillera Autonomous Region (CAR).
Having the most number of entries in almost all sports events, Baguio City won the overall championship with 64 golds, 54 silvers, and 55 bronze medals. La Union province placed second with 10 golds, nine silvers, and eight bronzes. Malolos City, Bulacan bagged the third place with 10 golds, seven silvers, and seven bronzes.
Angeles City’s swimming team won six golds while table tennis contributed one gold for winning the singles event. Taekwondo won four silvers and two bronze medals.
Rosever Pascua, head of the Angeles City Sports Office (ACSO), said that despite the limited number of teams sent to the prestigious sports event, the whole delegation managed to rank 4th out of the 26 other provinces and cities in the overall standing.
“We have a strong contingent and the athletes played well despite having difficulties adjusting with the place’s high altitude,” Pascua said.
“Our taekwondo players could hardly breathe after every kick, they get tired easily. This is the reason why our Philippine team especially the boxers prefer to train here,” he added.
On the other hand, Rommel Asuncion defeated John Mark Caranto of Pangasinan in the finals of the table tennis event despite an injury on his left knee on the 5th and final set.
Pascua said all gold and silver medalists have qualified for the national competition set on December 10-13 in Naga City, Bicol.
For his part, Mayor Ed Pamintuan vowed to give incentives to all Angeleño medalists, their trainors and coaches.
“They should be rewarded for their determination to win, for bringing pride and glory to our beloved city,” the mayor stressed.
Pamintuan also said that “the win in the Batang Pinoy cluster meet is a glimpse of what could possibly happen in next year’s Central Luzon Regional Athletic Association (CLRAA) sports meet” scheduled in February in Iba, Zambales.
Batang Pinoy or the Philippine Youth Games is one of the sports programs of the national government for young students and out-of-school youths (15 years old and below).
It aims to produce new breeds of players who will compete in various international competitions like the Youth Olympic Games. - (PIA)
