Baguio City moving ahead on anti-smoking campaign

Baguio is a step ahead with regards to its anti-smoking campaign that is why city officials are patting themselves at the back. For several years now, the city has been making headway with its campaign. Although Baguio remains far from achieving a 100% smoke-free city, results have been satisfactory that Mayor Mauricio Domogan has acknowledged a marked improvement in the local residents consciousness to the city's drive on anti-smoking so much so that smoking residents have, in most cases, avoided smoking in public places.

According to the mayor, the anti-smoking campaign has been incorporated in the pollution component of the four-pronged cleanliness program of the Alay sa Kalinisan Inc. (ASKI) which is a group composed of the different sectors of the city.

With the adoption of Ordinance No. 8 series of 2008 of the Comprehensive Anti-Smoking Ordinance of Baguio City and its Implementing Rules and Regulations it is now prohibited to smoke in public utility vehicles, government-owned vehicles or other means of public transport, accommodation and entertainment establishments, public buildings, public places, enclosed public places or any enclosed area outside one’s private resident or private place of work except in duly-designated smoking rooms. There have already been reported arrests to people caught in violation of the said ordinance but the number varies each week. Violators are given a fine ranging from P500 to P2,000 or imprisonment of not less than 1 month but not exceeding 6 months or both fine and imprisonment.
