New tricks employed by carnappers

The Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) announced about a trending method carnappers are employing to con their victims. This new trick used by suspects involves renting the target vehicle for several days, request for an extension for a couple more days then pawn or use it for collateral to a loan.

Several suspects, on separate occasions, have already been arrested using the said scheme. One incident involves a van where the suspect rented it for a week for P7,000. Due to a problem on the breaks, the suspect called a mechanic then took the vehicle, together with the car's documents, for a car wash. On the next day, the van's owner asked the suspect on the condition of the van through text and the suspect answered that it is still being repaired. After more than a week, on October 11, the suspect paid the owner P5,100 while the P1,900 is paid to the mechanic for the repair then asked the owner for another week extension on the rent.

On October 15, the owner asked the suspect to return the van but the suspect promised to return it on Oct. 18. On the promised date, however, the suspect informed the owner that the vehicle was already pawned.

Another incident involves a car, using the same method, where another suspect rented it last Oct. 7 for a week. When 1 week has passed, the suspect asked for another 2 days extension only to find out later, to the car owner's surprise that the suspect already used the car as collateral to a P130,000 loan, without the owner's consent.

Others who have been victimized by this scheme are advised to contact the Baguio City Police Office to report the incident. Their hotline is 166 or call tel. no. 304-6997. The BCPO also urged vehicle owners to never give the original documents of their vehicle.
