Kayang pioneering an eco-compost urinal

Upper Kayang has come up with an idea to manage some of their waste and providing a free public urinal in the area. The idea is to turn bio-degradable waste into compost with the help of urine to speed up the process of composting.

The set-up makes use of used cans that instead of throwing it away, it was put together to make a cubicle where you can urinate. A cubicle is available to both men and women and the urine from these cubicle goes directly to a composed pit via a PVC pipe. These compost can then be used for tree planting purposes.

Project owner of this urinal is proud of what they have put up as it provides the area with a free urinal which is very useful specially to older people, provides vendors in the area a place to throw their bio-degradable waste and a compost to be used in their re-greening program. These cubicles, however, are strictly for urinating and nothing else.

According to a vendor in the area, the eco-urinal has a very positive effect because prior to the installation of the urinal, aside from being dirty, the area also smells bad as it smells like urine but with the installation of the urinal it is no longer disgusting.

Women using the urinal however are advised to bring an umbrella or similar item for use in covering themselves as the cubicle does not provide sufficient covering.
