Benguet has risen! This is what the Grand Canao signifies

Benguet has risen!

This is how Benguet Governor Nestor Fongwan described the province during the grand canao as highlight of the 2011 Adivay and Benguet‘s 111th foundation anniversary celebration last week.

The Grand Canao was again seen after two years of absence from the annual celebration due to the calamities that hit the province.

It can be recalled that in October 2009, at least a hundred died in the province due to typhoon Pepeng. The most severe was the land slide in Little Kibungan in Puguis, this town which killed at least 70 people. Agriculture and infrastructure in the province were also badly affected.

Again in October last year, typhoon Juan damaged thousands of hectares of vegetables farms which affected the production of vegetables and other crops to decrease.

Fongwan said that this year, the province is proud that it is already “alive” and risen from the tragic situation and the Grand Canao is a thanksgiving celebration also for all the people of Benguet.

At least 30 native pigs and were offered during the traditional ‘owik’ led by provincial and municipal official at the Benguet Sports Center grounds here .

The native pigs were then given rituals by elders and were cooked and fed to the thousands of individuals from the 13 municipalities, tourists and other visitors during the event. Two cows were also butchered.

With this year’s theme of “Exploring Benguet’s Best,” the governor also encouraged his constituents to be more industrious as do the best for the province.

He added that people must also continuously pray to the Almighty Lord so that the province would be spared from any destructive calamity and tragic disaster.

Meanwhile, Oriental Mindoro Governor Alfonso Umali, who was the guest during the event, commended the unity of the people of Benguet as they come together and celebrate the occasion in unison.

Umali, who is also the President of the League of Province in the Philippine and the Union of Local Authorities in the Philippines, noted that officials and other politicians came to the grand canao and joined the celebration. He said that other provinces are having a hard time converging their officials and constituents to have an event such as this. He said that this is one of the best practices on politics and leadership the province could share and other provinces could learn from.

He called on the provincial and municipal leaders and the people of Benguet to stay united for the development and progress of the province. - (PIA / by Redjie Cawis)
