Christmas decor from an unlikely source

Don't look now but your just bought Christmas decor may have just been made by one of the inmates at the Baguio City Jail.

The more than 400 city jail inmates have started to sell to the public their various Christmas lanterns, decorations and other artifacts in accordance with their livelihood program.

This was learned from Erwin Paltongan, one of the senior officials of the Baguio Jail Management and Penology (BJMP). The prices are within the affordable levels of buyers as the inmates themselves were aware how many shun from apparent over-priced fresh flowers during the observance of All Saints Day here.

"By tradition, their earnings this season are used to buy gifts for their respective families and sponsor their Christmas programs and parties. We can say that this helped their rehabilitation while their respective cases are being heard in the Courts," he said.

To date, the detention facility here is among the best in the country due to factors like strict observance of human rights, livelihood program, recreational activities, spiritual sessions, and even strictly supervised conjugal visits.

Paltongan has asked the usual patrons of the inmates' artistic products to once again buy from them during the Christmas holidays "to give cheer to them and their families."
