The recognition was given by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), through the Local Government Academy, in partnership with the United Nations Development Fund in Manila in consonance with the global observance of World AIDS Day last December 1.

The award carried a P50,000 incentive.

According to DILG-Cordillera regional director Corazon Guray, Baguio City was the region’s official entry to the CHAMP search, which aims to provide an avenue for recognizing and assessing programs of the different local government units (LGUs), as well as in strengthening organizational and political strategies in combating Human Immuno Virus-Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV-AIDS) to promote effective and sustainable local responses to such fatal disease.

Guray also stressed that the said recognition would serve as an inspiration and advocacy tool for action and change, as well as provide impacts for the improvement of HIV-AIDS program and spur collaborative effort from all stakeholders, from the public and private sector alike.

The city government is continuously supportive of the city’s advocacy against HIV-AIDS, which is being spearheaded by the city’s AIDS Watch Council (AWAC) headed by its president, Dr. Charles Cheng, a private medical practitioner and a dedicated citizen of Baguio.

AWACl, which is composed of various agencies and organizations from both the government and private sector, is in the forefront of the city’s Information, Education and Communication (IEC) advocacy campaign on HIV-IDS.

Through the City Health Services Office (HSO) Reproductive Health and Wellness Center (RHWC), which serves as the official secretariat of AWAC, the city government, in partnership with the Bars and Restaurants Association of Baguio is also doing its best to maintain a clean and healthy night entertainment establishments or business in the city.

Meanwhile, the DILG-CAR also handed the city government a certificate of commendation for such award last December 9 during the awarding of the locally-initiated SIGLAT Award citing outstanding barangays in the region. - (PIA / by Lito Dar)
