The Pico barangay council passed anew the amended comprehensive solid waste management ordinance.

The amendment was based on the council’s observation on the unsystematic waste disposal of households and commercial establishment, which causes unsightly surroundings and spread of communicable diseases. The improper waste disposal also caused degradation of the environment.
“The practice of waste segregation to facilitate reuse and recycling does not only reduce the cost of collection and disposal of garbage but conserves the natural resources of materials and avoids wasteful consumption of goods,” read the ordinance.
The ordinance aims to ensure round–the-clock cleanliness through orderly management of waste; eradicates unsightly, uncovered and overflowing waste containers in streets, public places and open spaces; maximize and optimize sanitary resource recovery for feeds; and to minimize pollution.
Violators of the ordinance will be penalized five to 20 days of community service and a fine of P250 to P1,000. These penalties vary on the level of the offense.
Meanwhile, the council is also pushing another ordinance mandating junkshop owners, caretakers and other relative businessmen not to entertain and purchase scrap materials sold by children below 15 years old.
It was observed some children are usually involved in stealing scrap and household materials to sell.
Violators will face a fine of P500 to P1,000 and cancellation of business permits as well as closure of the establishment if found guilty beyond reasonable doubt. - (PIA / by Rubyloida Bitog)
