Gender equality forum conducted by DSWD

The government through the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)-Cordillera wants to fulfill the millennium development goal (MDG) on gender equality before it’s too late.

The MDGs were formulated by the United Nations members in 2000 to provide concrete and numerical benchmarks for tackling extreme poverty in its many dimensions. Countries under the United Nations committed to achieve the eight MDGs by 2015.

The MDGs also provide a framework for the entire international community to work together toward a common end, making sure that human development reaches everyone, everywhere.

The municipality of Tublay is one of the places in the country still unaware of the existence of the MDGs specifically on the gender equality. This prompted the DSWD-Cordillera to visit the town last November 28 where the agency conducted a gender sensitivity seminar.

“Gender and development program of our country is not only for women but also for men because there are also men victims of abuses,” DSWD-Cordillera chief of operations divisions Janet Armas said during an open forum.

“We don’t have cases here on gender inequality but this activity will help our barangay officials to be gender sensitive in performing their duties,” said Mayor Ruben Paoad.

“We will designate five percent of the total budget of our local government to support gender and development programs in order not to experience gender abuses in our municipality,” he added. (SunStar / by Rubyloida Bitog)
