Baguio's Silahis ng Pasko offers variety of treats

The longest running Silahis ng Pasko with a touch of sharing, caring, merry-making and fun-filled treats will shower the city with wholesome collage of events this Yuletide season.

Silahis ng Pasko is a wholesome Christmas offering embracing all sectors of society such as the less fortunate, persons with special abilities apart from tots, kiddies, students, parents, elderly, balikbayans, among others.

The grand opening of Silahis ng Pasko 2011 on December 1, will swarm the city's main streets through a children-parent Christmas Mardigras.

Silahis ng Pasko brainchild and veteran newsman Nars Padilla said the one of a kind Mardigras will showcase the day care center children clad in a variety of Christmas attires with the special participation of PHASES Learning Center.

City Social Welfare Officer Betty Fangasan, who chairs the more than a month event, said the 3,000 day care children from all over the city coming from 106 day care centers will march down Session Road en route to Harrison Road and finally to the Melvin Jones Grandstand for the grand opening program and ceremonies.
Mayor Mauricio Domogan and Congressman Bernardo Vergara will give their Christmas greetings in the opening ceremonies of the 38th Anniversary Celebration of Silahis ng Pasko 2011.

In the afternoon would be the crowning of Miss and Mr. Little Silahis ng Pasko sa Baguio 2011.

The program will also launch the first Children's Kultora-O-Rama dance fest that will feature native dances and provincial folk dances, part of the Filipino culture which seemingly is now vanishing according to Padilla.

'It is high time to dig into the love of culture, knowledge and appreciation of these dances which is basically the goal of engaging into such endeavor,' said Padilla stressing the need to teach the children to appreciate and enliven part of the Filipino culture.

On December 4, the Philippine Military Academy, will do silent drill at the Burnham Park followed by a band concert at the Malcolm Square.

From December 7 to10 would be the quest for the Baguio Lucky Christmas Family 2011. They will be selected based on the list of the National Housing Targetting System of the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

The winning family will be accorded with red carpet reception. They will be toured around the city and will be handed lots of surprises.

On December 8, in time for the celebration of the Immaculate Conception Day for Roman Catholics would be a Holy Mass at the National Correspondents Club of Baguio Shrine of the Brown Madonna along Km 7 Asin Road, Tadiangan, Tuba, Benguet.
December 10 would be a special day for special people. To be hosted by the Texas Instruments Philippines, Inc. (TIP) would be a wheelathon for paraplegics, walkathon for the blind, and chess for the sightless.

The City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) on the other hand will sponsor the Children's Palaro for the blind, mentally challenged, hearing and speech impaired, paraplegics to take place at the Malcolm Square.

The Baguio City National High School will render dances and will sing Christmas carols on December 11 at the Malcolm Square hosted by the Baguio-Benguet Market Plaza Cooperative Multi-Purpose.

Newspaper boys, shoeshine boys, baggage boys, bag sellers will also have fun and partake from the Children's Christmas fun alley and raffle joys activity through a palaro and raffle for gift items hosted by the CNS International Language School.

On December 24, will be a special Christmas treat for 100 less fortunate children in one of the city's food chains.

The Quest for the Baguio Lucky Christmas Baby for 2011 and New Year Baby 2012 will also take place on December 25, 2011 and January 1, 2011, respectively at the Benguet General Hospital.

Watch out as Santa Claus is coming to town morning of December 25 particularly along the stretch of Session Road to distribute goodies to kids.

The balikbayans who prefer to enjoy their holidays in the city will also have a chance to be the Lucky Balikbayan on December 30. The quest has various categories - individual, couple and family.

Together they will join the rest of the balikbayans and have a taste of 'pinikpikan,' an indigenous chicken dish, together with the Cordillera International Athletes and Sportsmen.

Also on December 30 would be the awarding of 10 outstanding members of the media.
An add on activity would be a special art On-the-Spot Painting Exhibit by Filipino artist Noly Pobre from Switzerland from December 1-30.

To culminate the activities is the Kafagway Sportsfest to be held on January 9 followed by the awarding ceremonies on January 14, 2012. - (SCA PIA CAR/Benguet / by Susan Aro)
