DOH Cordillera Regional Director Dr. Myrna Cabotaje said the public should be alert of common respiratory illnesses such as cough, cold, fever and flu, as well as on gastro-intestinal illnesses which may rise during this cold season.

According to Cabotaje, there are seasonal occurrences wherein some illnesses tend to increase during this yuletide season like the non-communicable and cold weather illnesses.

She explained that of non-communicable diseases or what they call as lifestyle-related diseases, which include hypertensions (increasing blood pressures) and strokes.

Cabotaje advised the public to maintain healthy lifestyle, balanced diet and proper nutrition. She also reminded the public about proper hygiene practices, physically and in food handling and preparation, as well as in practicing proper hygienic etiquette, such as covering their mouth while sneezing or coughing.

Meantime, Cabotaje also cautioned the public of influenza- like illnesses, which is usually prevalent during the rainy season, but tends also to have increased occurrences during this cold season.

Aside from the common flu shots, Cabotaje also advises the public to increase their immune system by taking up vitamins which can help protect people from getting common coughs and colds.

On the AH1N1 concern, Cabotaje reiterates to the public that there is no cause for alarm as the AH1N1 virus is already being considered among the common type of flu.

Cabotaje also affirmed that by next year, A-H1N1 anti-virus will now be included or incorporated to the regular flu-shot (vaccine) that will be made available to the public. - (PIA / by Lito Dar)
