Motions of Committee on Tourism Chairman Councilor Elmer Datuin for the establishment of carnivals in the city were ignored by council members claiming the areas where these carnivals would be set up have already earlier met opposition from residents surrounding them.

Councilor Perlita Chan-Rondez expressed her vigorous opposition to the carnival and rides particularly those proposed near the Baguio Convention Center due to previous complaints of the Supreme Court and the University of the Philippines Baguio of noise and security issues in the area.

However, Datuin claimed the Baguio Convention Center and City Tourism Officer Benny Alhambra have not objected to the setting up of the carnival in the area.

He added the proposed carnival subject to complaints last year was supposed to be conducted during the summer months when the SC conducts its regular sessions in their compound and not during the Christmas season.

For several years now, carnivals have not been staged in the city due to questions on safety of their rides and opposition from residents opposed in gambling activities and games held inside these carnivals which young children patronize.

Among the proposed carnivals rejected by the council were from Rodel Macalintong at the Convention Center car park supposed to be staged from December 15 to January 13.

Carnival proposals from Benjie Dumelod to be staged at the old auditorium area were also denied by the council together with another proposal from Alvarez Pait for their carnival and rides to be staged at the right side of the Convention center.

Councilors also questioned the lack of accompanying documents to discuss the proposals of carnivals operators which resulted to majority of the councilors from abstaining from voting. - (SunStar / JM Agreda)
