Dr. Elvie Villalobos of DOH environment and occupational health division said the health office is reminding gift givers to buy only safe toys for children.

The Food and Drug Authority (FDA) is also conducting compliance monitoring of establishments and market surveillance of toy products. Those non-complaint toys are subject for recall and disposal.

Villalobos said the toys should be durable, well constructed, safe, appealing and suitable to the age of kids.

The DOH advises gift givers not to buy toys for children below three years old. These are balls with a diameter of 1.75 inches or less so as to prevent choking; those toys that easily break into small parts or pieces such as glass or brittle plastics; those containing small detachable parts or pieces which could lodged in the throats; with sharp points and edges; with electrical parts that could pinch or entrap fingers, toes, or hair; and with parts out together by straight pins, sharp wires or nails that are exposed and easily detached.

The public is likewise reminded to keep in mind the acronym SAFER TOYS. S is to Seek warning labels, A is for Age really matters, F to Follow instructions; E to Expect accidents; R to Remove tiny parts that can cause choking; T or Throw away parts that can cause lacerations or injuries; O for Out with loud toys that can damage the ears; Y for Yes to educational toys and S for Share the fun. - (SunStar / by Lydia C.
