The Department of Health (DOH) this year is advocating a new firework-injury reduction campaign dubbed as ‘Aksyon Paputok Injury Reduction’ or APIR (Give me five).

Since the use of firecrackers has long been part of the Filipino tradition especially during New Year's eve and that Republic Act 7183 mandates regulated, not a total ban, on the sale, manufacture, distribution and the use of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devises, the DOH campaign shifted on the advocacy for an organization of a community fireworks/firecracker display.

DOH-CAR Regional Director Myrna Cabotaje bared this on the kapihan media forum Wednesday.

Cabotaje also encouraged the public to use safer merry-making materials such as trumpets, vehicle-horns, tin cans and other safe noise makers in welcoming 2012.

She also called on all local chief executives to support the advocacy in their respective localities by informing their constituents about the tips for a complete and stress-free yuletide celebration. At the same time, she urged every local government to put in local ordinances or laws that will put a total ban on the sale and use of firecrackers in their locality.

Cabotaje reiterated the DOH reminders that: firecrackers/fireworks cause injuries and endanger health; children should not use any of such type; the public, especially children should keep away from exploding firecracker/fireworks; never pick-up used firecracker/fireworks; and for the public to seek immediate medical treatment for any or all firecracker/firework-related injuries.

She also enjoined the help and cooperation of everyone in the reduction of firecracker-related injuries in the country especially here in Cordillera.

Based on DOH-Cordillera records, fireworks/firecracker related injuries in the region increased by 13 percent from the 85 cases in 2009 to the 96 cases recorded in 2010. - (PIA)
