DOH-FDA Cordillera head Dr. Erwin Baclig said that several toys could be harmful to the health of children especially those containing harmful chemicals like lead.

Baclig said that although they have not yet received report of such incident in the region, they are issuing warning to the public particularly the parents, to buy safe toys from accredited and legal stores only.

Baclig said that parents should always look for the FDA accredited stickers and serial number on toys to be sure that it does not contain lead or other toxic chemicals.

The DOH also warns the public to buy only toys that are labeled "nontoxic" and to read the fine prints about the chemical contents to ensure that these have no lead.

Toys that are very shiny and with paint that rubs off on hands may have lead, he said. Baclig said that chemically treated toys did not pass the official process and documentation because mostly these are smuggled goods being brought here.

The DOH also advised parents to make sure their children wash their hands thoroughly after playing with their toys.

Baclig clarified that the DOH-FDA cannot confiscate toys which are toxic since they have no “police powers.” - (PIA / by Redjie Cawis)
