In an interview with DZMM, FDA Assistant Director Nazarita Tacandong said a compound known as 3MCPD (chlorodeoxyglycerol) was found in some generic soy sauce samples from the market. She said the compound is carcinogenic.

The tainted soy sauce are said to be bearing no label or any information regarding its formulation.

Tacandong asked the public to be more discerning in buying the product, which usually comes in clear plastic.

She clarified, however, that the tainted soy sauce does not necessarily come from China, where a range of products such as milk and green tea have been reported to have been tainted in the past.

The said compound also supposedly causes sterility. It is also said that a limit of .02 gram of 3MCDP is only allowed per 1 kilogram of soy sauce. – (DZMM; ABS-CBN News Channel / by Dexter Ganibe)
