Mayor Florencio Bentrez said the Concord company is looking into 30 to 100 hectare-area to establish the $500 million project incorporated in a multi-ecology center that will constitute a school, hospital, and eco-tourism park.

The proposed sites will be along Taloy Norte and Nangalisan, said Bentrez.

Bentrez said all kinds of trash, whether biodegradable or residual, can all be fed in to the processing plant and in a few days, its by-product will be converted into energy such as fertilizers.

The waste-to-energy plant which converts thrash to heat and electricity is practiced in Europe, now ahead in the technology. It was practiced in the United States years back but now has lagged behind due to some environment issues.

In Denmark, it now considers garbage as a clean alternative fuel. Accordingly, it is far cleaner than conventional incinerators as it is provided with dozens of filters that catch pollutants even those from metals.

Bentrez tagged the foreign technology as “mother solution to all solutions” now with regards to problems on waste disposal system being experienced right.

But he admitted that the project is still pre-mature as it needs further negotiations and consultations from the people. He is appealing to the residents to consider the proposal.

The municipal government identified five proposed sites of engineered sanitary landfill which mandates local government units to establish one but failed. The reason – the people are opposed, according to Bentrez. The social acceptability of the people is one of the requirements prior to the establishment of an ESL. (PIA / by Susan Aro)
