No dumping of waste at Irisan dump site

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – Although a legal team is studying violations of the Baguio City, further investigation by the Benguet Provincial Board is being done regarding the trash situation in Irisan dumpsite.

“Mayor [Mauricio] Domogan keeps on saying [the city] stopped dumping trash at the Irisan site then we will have to see if it’s true,” Vice Governor Crescensio Pacalso said.

Pacalso said the province is now in the thick of verifying if there has been no dumping of waste at the dumpsite.

Last week, Board Member Juan Nazarro directed Baguio City to stop dumping in Irisan and asked the Solid Waste Management Board to revoke the permit of the city to dump trash at the area issued April 2010.

Pacalso said both resolutions are now put on hold pending the investigation done to verify if dumping has indeed stopped.

However, the vice governor said the resolution asking the Benguet legal team to prepare cases for violations by Baguio City against Tuba is ongoing.

Last week, officials of Tuba presented to the Board their plight relative to the Irisan garbage slide, which affected the municipality of Tuba and asked the Provincial Board for support in the trash mess the city has involved the highland town into.

Pacalso said waiting for the results of the investigation is more prudent than launching into a defensive move against the City of Baguio without proper research.

Pacalso also said the investigation will include looking into the permit given to the city allowing them to dump trash into the Irisan site.
