Mayor Mauricio Domogan on October 5 revealed that Baguio City has made it to the final list of the National Juvenile Justice Welfare Council (NJJWC) on Child Friendly Cities. A team composed of representatives from the National Economic Development Administration (NEDA), Department of Health (DOH), National Juvenile Justice Welfare Council (JJWC), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) came to the City to inspect the programs, projects and facilities put in place to address issues concerning minors.
Barangays to be visited were chosen at random which were Lower Magsaysay, San Luis Village, Gabriela Silang, City Camp Proper and North Sanitary Camp. During said visit, the City Council for the Protection of Children (CCPC) met with the visiting group to discuss projects which includes “Center for Kids” in Balenben, Irisan, implementation of the diversion program for Children in Conflict with Law (CICL) which was passed in 2007 under RA9344, “Brotherhood for Peace” a the city through youth-led projects, Child and Family Services and the Baguio Center for Young Adults.
Despite all these Domogan stressed that "there is a need for parents to get involved in maintaining peace and order in the city if only to secure safety of our kids.”
Aside from Baguio City, Bacolod, Mandaluyong and Olongapo are the others being eyed for the title of Most Child Friendly City of 2011. The selected city by the judging council will be conferred to President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III in Malacanang October 28.
