Hook and Line Fishing Contest at Burnham Lake







Baguio City's popular park, Burnham Park, was the venue for a hook and line fishing contest attended by third year students from the Baguio City National High School. The said activity was conducted by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources - CAR in coordination with the Baguio City local government. The BFAR has previously stocked the lake with fish.


All contestants were given 30 minutes to catch a fish and Gwen Awing was announced the winner for catching the biggest fish. Jonathan Pilo and Donita Malapitan got second and third, respectively. A P2,000 cash prize was awarded to the winners courtesy of the guest of honor Congressman Bernardo Vergara and a scientific calculator was given to all the participants given by BFAR. Winner Gwen Awing is also promised to be included in a scholarship program by the good congressman.

The said activity is in line with the celebration of Fish Conservation Month which this October with the theme Karagatan Pagyamanin, Isda Paramihin, Buong Mundo Pasiglahan.

Aside from the fishing contest, BFAR and Vergara also took the lead in stocking the lake with Japanese Koi. Congressman Vergara also took the opportunity to thank BFAR for promoting hook and line fishing at the city's premiere park and said it could be an added tourist attraction and could also be a part of the activity during the city's annual Panagbenga or Baguio Flower Festival.

What's next to BFAR is the releasing of fingerlings to streams and lakes especially to areas with many fisher folks or just loves fishing.
