DTI-CAR Consumer Welfare and Trade Regulation Division Chief Atty. Sam Gallardo advised that the public should assure that the establishments they will visit for their Christmas shopping are compliant to trade and industry regulations and laws.
On buying electronic gadgets or equipment, Gallardo advised consumers to check and test what they are buying for possible hidden defects and that they should know its warranty stipulations such as warranty period.
Gallardo also stressed that imported products should have an ICC Mark or the Import Commodity Clearance sticker and for local products it should have a PS (Product Standard) Mark.
On the ‘No Return , No Exchange Policy,’ Gallardo clarified that only defective products can be returned or exchanged and that it does not apply if the consumer had a change of mind on his purchase.
“The said policy only covers products with factory defects/s or imperfection due to the seller’s negligence, and does not apply to defective products due to the mishandling of the buyer,” Gallardo stressed.
On buying food products, Gallardo advised the public to always check the labels especially on the products ‘expiry or best before date’ and the price tag before the purchase. Consumers, he said, should only buy from reputable establishments and avoid buying from people that they do not now or from fly by night stores.
“People should also avoid buying food products that are in excess of their actual need”, Gallardo added.
He also advised the public to be green consumers.
“When going to the market, people should also bring in their own plastics or bags, so that they will not need to acquire additional plastics, which will only become an add-on to the non-recyclable wastes in their homes,” Gallardo emphasized.
Meantime, Gallardo affirmed that based on their monitoring, there is sufficient supply of food products in the market for this Christmas and New Year and their prices remain stable. - (PIA / by Lito Dar)
