Clean motoring being sought

Environmentalists are advocating for clean motoring.

Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office chief Julius Kollin is bent on educating motorists to stop cluttering the highways.

Kollin said a massive information education campaign (IEC) will happen on December 1 for motorists plying the Benguet–Viscaya road.

Three checkpoints will be set at the length of the road, the first at the Gurrel area, followed by Beckel site and at Pito. Over 100 volunteers will join the IEC, flagging down motorists and giving them a 5-minute lecture on the Republic Act on garbage disposal.

Kollin said the motorists will be lectured on keeping the highways clean and informing motorists of fines and penalties if found violating the national law. “A yellow ribbon will be tied on the side mirror of the vehicles after the lecture to show they have been reached by the IEC team.”

Kollin said the activity launched last year was successfully done along the Halsema Highway. “We know motorists litter; the garbage we collected were water bottles, snack packs and juice containers.”

Kollin said the garbage collection last year was done a few hours after the information drive, proving the trash came from motorists in the area.

Kollin said the municipalities of Atok and Buguias are some of the few areas penalizing motorists when proven to be littering. “The barangay captain of Natubleng is vigilant in apprehending litterbugs.” - (PIA / by Ma. Elena Catajan)
