Japan was represented by chairman Tsukuro Kuramato while Governor Nestor Fongwan stood for the province in the MOA signing, which was later ratified by the Provincial Board.

Under the MOA, the province will be sending skilled and qualified agricultural farmers to Japan to undergo an internship program.

Surrounded by the Seto Inland Sea in the north, the Uwa Sea in the west and Shikoku Mountains in the south, Ehime Prefecture, with an area of about 5,676 square kilometer and a population of about 1,500,000, lies in the northern part of the island of Shikoku, the smallest of the four major islands of Japan.

Major industries in eastern Ehime are shipbuilding, heavy chemical, paper pulps and textile industries. Around the City of Matsuyama, cotton textiles, agricultural machinery and apparatus, oil refineries, synthetic fiber and pottery and porcelain industries prosper. The rest of the prefecture is devoted to forestry, agriculture or fishery and most notably Ehime mandarin oranges (mikan) and cultured pearls.

The internship program is aimed to contribute to the agricultural development and effective technology transfer both for the province of Benguet and Japan.

Fongwan signed a MOA on Wednesday for the promotion of safe vegetables with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica), enabling farmers to go on training in Japan to learn farming technology.

Jica expansion areas are Atok, Buguias, Mankayan, Tublay, Kabayan, Kibungan Tuba and la Trinidad in coordination with the Japan Agricultural Exchange Council. - (SunStar / by Ma. Elena Catajan)
