Irisan road closed for repairs

ANOTHER road closure in Irisan is expected to draw more criticisms from motorists experiencing traffic congestion while plying city streets undergoing major repairs.

Speaking before the City Council Monday, Barangay Irisan chief Thomas Dumalti requested the august body to approve the closure of Cypress Road to regular traffic from November 15 to December 15. The proposal was endorsed by Committee on Transportation and Public Utilities chair Councilor Nicasio Aliping.

The road project will be implemented by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Baguio district engineering office.

King Gaspar Construction, the winning contractor of the project, committed to fast track the road works to avoid inconvenience to the riding public and residents of Irisan and Tadiangan, Tuba, Benguet.

According to Dumalti, the P5-million project is funded by the Priority Development Assistance Fund of Representative Bernardo Vergara.

Dumalti said the barangay council also issued a similar resolution closing Cypress Road, claiming a one-way traffic scheme is not feasible as the road itself is too narrow and steep, which would further constrain heavy equipment needed for the road repair.

The barangay council already consulted with affected residents particularly with those living near Cypress and residents of big subdivisions like Marville, he added.

Council members, meanwhile, said the developer of Marville Subdivision in Tadiangan did not build an alternate road exiting to Asin Road contrary to its planned design, which is why most of its residents are still using the Cypress Road to reach their homes.

Several road repair projects initiated by the DPWH continue to draw the ire of motorists for the delays in its implementation, resulting to traffic congestions prompting members of the House of Representatives to move for the investigation of the contractors bidding for different projects.

Among the road repair projects still being undertaken in the city include portions of Naguilian and Ferguson Roads and Magsaysay Avenue.

Before approving the resolution, councilors, meanwhile, reminded the barangay council of Irisan to prod the contractor to place signages informing the public of project duration and cost.

The councilors also told the barangay council to remind the contractor to provide access to motorists in times of medical emergencies or during fires. - (SunStar / by JM Agreda)
