John Hay to grow Arabica coffee

The Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) and its estate manager, John Hay Management Corporation (JHMC), inked an Agro-forest Management Agreement with Rocky Mountain Arabica Coffee Company (RMACC) at the Camp John Hay Bell House last week.

Under the agreement, BCDA-JHMC will allow RMACC to plant and grow Arabica coffee in four hectares to 100 hectares of land within the Camp John Hay reservation.

This area is in addition to the 60 hectares RMACC has already leased from the Camp John Hay Development Corporation (CJHDevCo), the private company developing CJH.

RMACC is a fully integrated Philippine corporation involved in the production and commercialization of quality Arabica coffee using environment-friendly production technologies. It intends to plant at least 100,000 coffee trees in CJH to be able to produce 300,000 kilograms of coffee per year of operation. Premium Arabica coffee from the BCDA-JHMC areas will be marketed as John Hay Coffee.

In a statement, JHMC president Dr. Jamie Eloise Agbayani said, “BCDA and JHMC welcome the agro-forestry investment of RMACC as it will complement and improve the environment and ecosystem of the pine forest within the reservation while generating employment among the locals.”

Among those present during the signing were BCDA president & CEO Arnel Paciano Casanova, JHMC chairman of the board Silvestre Afable Jr., and RMACC president Pierre Yves Cote.

Aside from Camp John Hay, RMACC has an existing plantation in a 16.5 hectare lot in Tuba, Benguet. RMACC also has plantations in Kiamba, Saranggani Province, Kitanglad, Libona and Miarayon, Talakag in Bukidnon.
