To guide the public in buying Christmas lights, DTI Provincial Director Freda Gawisan said posters are issued on the list of Christmas light brands and guidelines in buying and identifying genuine and fake Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) marks.

Posters are placed in retail outlets, hardware stores, department stores, particularly in establishments selling Christmas lights.

Gawisan urged the public to buy only Christmas lights certified by the DTI and look for the genuine ICC mark in the product.

Retailers and suppliers are subject to investigation if they sell substandard Christmas lights in the market, she said.

It is strongly recommended that Christmas lights, whether used or brand new should be tested before these are draped on trees and around the house.

The testing is needed particularly when several lengths are being strung together and plugged into only one electrical socket. Some consumers are unaware that certain lights are only for indoor use, Gawisan said.

The consumers can also act against substandard Christmas lights according to Gawisan adding that they can return the defective Christmas lights and ask for refund of their money.

Consumers who also purchased uncertified Christmas lights are advised to file their complaints to the nearest DTI office or call DTI Hotline (074) 619-2722. - (PIA / by Joseph B Zambrano)
