There is no better way to tell how the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) accomplished promoting small and medium enterprises in the province than the 60% hike in sales performance of exhibitors to the 2011 Impakbsat Trade Fair in Alabang recently.

Benita Mangadap of DTI provincial office, who led the exhibitors to the fair, said the unwavering demand of buyers on native handicrafts, particularly Kalinga products, has pumped the haul of small traders from the province to P1,675,459 from last year’s P991,284 or a leap of 60 percent.
The Impakabsat, coined from the Cordillera provinces of Ifugao, Mt. Province, Abra, Kalinga, Apayao and Benguet , is a yearly out-of-town trade fair organized by DTI under its marketing promotion for small-medium entrepreneurs (SMEs).
For over 10 years now, DTI has assisted SMEs in opening new markets of their products through the Impakabsat, where Cordillera products are lured to buyers from all walks of life, on a national scope.
This year, DTI-Kalinga has brought 15 small traders who put-up 13 booths at the Carousel Court inside the Festival Mall in Alabang, which Mangadap considered a strategic venue for trade fairs because of its accessibility to buyers.
Among the top sellers of cash and booked orders from the province include Bro’s Antique & Modern Furniture with P460,700; Kalinga Food Treat – P236,770 and Ayatu’s Ethnic Crafts – P139,690.
Aside from DTI, Mangadap also attributed the high performance of local exhibitors to the financial assistance provided by the province and the City government.
The provincial government contributed P42,000, while the City of Tabuk shelled out P21,000 for booth rentals at P10,500 per booth, covering six booths.
The Rural Micro-entrepreneur Promotion Program (Rumepp) and Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP) divisions of DTI-Kalinga also poured in P42,000 for four booths, while the three remaining booths were personally shouldered by the other two exhibitors. - (PIA / by Larry Lopez)
