Starting at the back, Puckett had bogeys on Nos. 10 and 11 but battled back with five birdies the rest of the way, including a closing 20-foot birdie on the ninth to finish with a 61 in medal play.

"My back really ached, so I had to control my drives, which were a little wild. I had to compensate with the putting and chipping," said Puckett.

John Hay also got 30 points from Rudy Lockey, a pair of 26 from Bong Mandapat and Park Jong Won and a 24 from Clyde Cabreros that did not count under the five-to-play, four to count tournament backed by Toyota, Pacsports, Illy, Empire and Wilson.

With a 118 total for the day, John Hay amassed 218 for 36 holes, 14 points up on Maxima Komatsu before tackling its home course on Wednesday.

"Puckett played good today. He has overcome his opening-day jitters," said team captain Cabreros, adding he and the rest should get their stride when they shift to their home course.

"We are in a good spot as we go to our home course where we are familiar with the course and the greens," Cabreros added despite failing to count.

The two-week tournament is also backstopped by Fashion Rack, Air 21, Rizgolf, Supreme Bike, GPS Tracker, Golforce, San Miguel, Le Chef, Camp John Hay Development Corporation, Beaufort and Bayan Business.

Maxima Komatsu got a 32 from Bong Sison, a couple of 26 from Florene delos Santos and Poch Hernandez and the 22 of Dennis Cabalfin and Freddie Mendoza. The former champions dug themselves a hole by tallying 107 and 205 total going into John Hay.

Philippine Navy continued to struggle despite improving to 99 with 31 points coming from Francisco Sumulong.

Aguinaldo added 97 for 189 points and took an 18-point lead over Baguio Golf Team which added an 84 for 171. Cordillera Early Birds had an 84 for 158.

In Fil-B, Emil Alviar had a 22 as the team carded 79 for a two-day total of 168. Villa Cacho assembled 78 for 155 and snatched second from Capitol Hills. The latter had a 74 for 154. - (Malaya Business Insight)
